The history behind this Teddy Bear chess set
Adding to its prestige, the original vintage SAC Teddy Bear chess set was featured in the film "Paddington in Peru". The cinematic debut of the set not only showcases its exceptional design but also connects it to the cherished world of Paddington Bear - a character synonymous with adventure, kindness, and British charm. Owning this chess set allows you to bring a piece of that movie magic into your home, making it a must-have for fans and collectors alike
The story of the teddy bear is as heartwarming as the toy itself. In 1902, President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt embarked on a bear-hunting expedition in Mississippi. During the hunt, a small brown bear was captured and tied to a tree for the President to shoot. Displaying compassion, Roosevelt refused to harm the defenceless animal, a gesture that captured the nation's attention. Clifford Berryman, a cartoonist for the Washington Post, illustrated the scene, portraying the President turning away from the helpless cub.
Inspired by this act of kindness, Morris Michtom, a Brooklyn shopkeeper, crafted a toy bear and called it "Teddy's bear." The plush toy quickly gained popularity, capturing the hearts of children and adults alike. And so, the teddy bear was born - a symbol of comfort, love, and childhood innocence.
Over the years, teddy bears have become more than just toys, now commonly cherished companions that often stay with us throughout our lives. Their different characteristics and unique personalities make them highly collectible, each bear telling its own story.
Each piece in the set embodies classic teddy bear charm:
King Edward Bear is self evident, a right royal bear wearing regal robes and a bejewelled crown
Lady Edwina Bear, the Queen, is an admittedly nervous looking though radiant bride
Professor Sir Edward Bear M.A., the Bishop, is a dignified academic professor
The Teddy Bear Kid, as the Knight, comes with a complete six gun, chaps, and his ever faithful hobby horse
Sgt Ted E. Bear, the Rook, is shown in best ceremonial dress uniform
And the cute Baby Bear, the Pawn, is dressed in a sailor suit with his favourite toys
This chess set not only offers a delightful playing experience but serves as a charming decorative piece that adds character to any room. It's a celebration of history, nostalgia, and the simple joys that teddy bears have brought into our lives for over a century.
